This site is dedicated to the sport of flying safe, simple and legal trikes and the process of building them.
I started flying trikes back about 1992. We bought our first trike from Rick Helm in Phoenix at an air show. It was the early Sabre 340 with the Apco wing. We paid $4995 for it complete. It was a nice trike and easy to fly. Anyway, I had taken one lesson for about an hour. As I was leaving, Rick said something to me and I must have heard him wrong. I thought he told me to go ahead and fly. He probably said, "Goodbye." Anyway, the next day I went out and put it together and soloed. Once in air I distinctly remember thinking, "OK, I have about two hours to figure out how to land this thing." I flew around a little and then decided I had better start practicing if I ever wanted to get back on the ground. Lined it up, dropped it in and wow! My very first landing was absolutely perfect. Touched down, rolled out and I was now a trike flyer. So, what did I do. Stop and figure I was now ahead of the game. Nooo! I hit the gas and back in the air I go. I come around again for a repeat performance. Praise God I did not have an audience. They would still be laughing. The second landing was, well, more of a minor test event for landing gear struts. For some reason that at the time I did not understand, the trike all of a sudden decided to stop flying about 5 feet off the ground. I learned right then that a, I wasn't as good as I was telling myself and, b, the Sabre landing gear is really tough. I put it away and went home.
